The average smartphone has moved beyond simple communication and is capable of so many different things. If you own a smartphone, you most likely use it for an alarm, a calculator, a camera and photo album, or even as a way to listen to music. With all these features, it’s unsurprising we feel the need to have our smartphone close by. Over the past few years, notable companies have taken advantage of this weakness, inventing devices that make access to our smartphones while we’re on the move easier.
What is Apple CarPlay?
Initially released by Apple in 2014, CarPlay is a device that allows a car’s entertainment system to act as a display and controller for an iPhone. Apple describes it as “the ultimate copilot.” Reducing the need for hands-on engagement by connecting your iPhone to the system, it can help you navigate the roads, make calls, and listen to music while you focus on driving. Essentially, Apple has designed a device capable of performing many of the same functions the iPhone can. This device has been incorporated into many vehicles by major manufacturers (including Honda!), showcasing its popularity amongst drivers. Depending on the manufacturer, it can be controlled by drivers through the touchscreen or specific buttons, dials, and knobs in your car.
How to use Apple CarPlay.
Despite Apple CarPlay passing by its four-year birthday with very little fanfare, people still love the system. However, when it comes to setting it up, there are still a lot of questions. With this helpful little guide, we’ll take you through how to set your Apple CarPlay up properly in three easy steps!
- Unfortunately, it’s only available to (you’ve guessed it!) iPhone users and requires an iPhone 5 or newer to operate. For CarPlay to work, you need to ensure Siri is turned on. Plug your iPhone into your vehicle with a lightning cable.
- If your vehicle is capable of using it wirelessly, you’ll have to connect your phone by pressing the voice-command button on your steering wheel. From there, go to Settings > General > CarPlay, and tap Available cars to select your car.
- Turn your car on and wait for CarPlay to open. If it doesn’t open automatically, you’ll need to tap the CarPlay icon on the display. It will then prompt you to unlock your phone and agree to the device accessing your phone.
- Once your phone is connected, you’ll be able to use the voice-command button on your steering wheel to navigate CarPlay.
